When we teach life skills to our children, it is important to address many of the underlying challenges. Each life skill, such as coordinating clothing for style and weather, can be a huge challenge for some. Each process must be taught individually and with purpose.
Many of our children struggle with confusion and need constant reinforcement. We all want to look acceptable to our peers and most of us require some type of positive feedback. For our exceptional children, reinforcement for completion of the task is more important. They are who they are. Children and teens with additional challenges require repetitive teaching, and even then, we simply accept their willingness to succeed on their own.
We become exhausted, but we marvel and accept our children’s accomplishments. We parents sometimes take many tasks for granted, but for our precious children, simple things might really seem like rocket science.
