Have You Planned an Informal “Meet the Teacher” Yet?

The school year is approaching fast. The school staff has returned to work after a long summer’s nap.

Be proactive

This is a good time to contact your student’s case manager or resource teacher and ask for an informal introductory meeting. Let the case manager know you are not looking for a sit down meeting. Just a quick “meet and greet.” You are more likely to be granted this wish if you let them know ahead of time that they will not need to complete any paperwork. (The teacher will love that.)

While the current IEP is a good starting point, many teachers have different interpretations of your student’s accommodations.

It is a good idea to meet your student’s teachers and answer any questions they may have. Remember it is all about “teaching the teacher.” Open communication works best. Once the school year is under way, it will be very difficult to get everyone together right away.

Get in and get out

But here is the thing…your case manager, resource teacher, or administrator will be very busy this time of year. Not a good idea to “pop” in unannounced, but do email or call the school for an appointment. You will only need 10 minutes to quickly introduce your child and give a very brief, (and I mean brief) synopsis of your student’s strengths and weaknesses. That’s it!! That is all you need at this time; then quickly head for the door.

Did I say get out of there fast?

Remember, budgets are tight, teachers are busy, and your child is not the only one on the class roster. Try to be respectful of the teachers’ time. This ensures a good start to the new school year. Spending too much time in the beginning of the school year opens you up for random fodder and “teacher lounge talk.” You don’t want that.

Take the time to meet the teacher that will be teaching your child. Bringing classroom supplies never hurts; tissues, pencils, cleaning wipes. Send a message that you are available and willing to help teach your child.
