Whether you have a young child or teenager with special needs, you will want them to have everything they need for the upcoming school year. It is never too early to take an inventory of any school supplies you have from last year that might be re-used or re-purposed. Knowing ahead of time what you already have will save time and stress once you have your school supply list in hand.
There are some great sales going on now. If you wait until the start of school, you will most likely pay top dollar and have less of a selection to choose from.
Some school supplies to think about for special education students
1) Backpack with a large zippered opening. Some backpacks tend to be smaller than others. You will want to fit a lunchbox in the backpack if possible. If your child is physically challenged, a larger opening will be easier to access independently.
Pro Tip: Tie a ribbon or add a key chain to the zipper for easy opening.
2) Pencil grips. These are the bigger ones that look like erasers. Kids love them and they have spaces noted for either “left” or “right” fingers or thumbs. These are great for kids with motor skill challenges. While they are a bit more expensive, the larger size keeps them from getting lost and offer a better grip for students who need the added support.
Pro Tip: Send to school one at a time and ask the teacher can keep it in a convenient place for everyday use.
3) Fun “take home folder.” You will use this for notes and important papers between you and the teacher.
Tip: Buy a durable plastic flexible folder with inside pockets so it will last the entire school year.
4) Black permanent marker so that you may write your child’s name on everything that will go to school; including the backpack!
Tip: A fat tip marker works best because even permanent marker rubs off on some surfaces. Any color will do, but be sure to write your child’s name on everything!
5) There are so many cute and fun school supplies with many being so adorable they might just jump off the shelf and right into your shopping cart. Splurge a little…school is fun when your student can show off the fun stuff!
Tip: Wait for the supply list directly from your child’s teacher. Sometimes, the items recommended by the school are not even needed.
Stay ahead of the game and you will be ready when you get your school supply list from your new teacher.
